With the support of the DOVE Fund, Hearts For Hue has worked in collaboration with the Thua Thien Hue Water Company to install a water supply system for 40 households in Hong Thuy Commune, A Luoi District. Hong Thuy is located more than 100km from Hue City near the Lao border. It is a mountainous village where the rugged terrain makes farming quite difficult.
There are 3,169 people living in the commune, almost all belonging to the Pa Co ethnic minority. On March 19, 2018, Hearts For Hue conducted a survey to examine the water situation of the 40 households that received a new water supply system. The residents expressed joy now that they have clean water for cooking, cleaning and daily activities.
Mr. Xien, Vice Chairman of Hong Thuy Commune, said: “The local authorities were very happy that the standard of living improved thanks to the new clean water supply system. However, local authorities and residents here still worry that only 10% of households have appropriate latrines to use. 90% of the remaining households have been using unhygienic latrines or people use local streams which pollutes the water, affecting the environment as well as the health of anyone nearby. The local authorities are unable to assist the community because the commune does not have the budget to support the construction of latrines. In addition, the poverty rate is up to 30.5%. ”
During the survey, most residents expressed the need to have a clean and standard toilet to ensure hygiene. Ms. Doan Thi Lach, a member of Hong Thuy Commune, said, “My family and I have lived here for more than 30 years. Our entire family and even the neighbors are all using only one latrine. Life is difficult here and our standard of living is quite low. It is impossible for me to build a new latrine. We hope the sponsors will consider supporting us to build latrines here. ”
Hearts For Hue hopes that sponsors will consider supporting our program to improve the lives of the Hong Thuy community through the construction of compost latrines.
