The Rotary International has approved a program on improving living quality of the poor/ or disabled people in Vinh Thai commune.

About 25km southeast of Hue city, Vinh Thai is one of poorest communes of Phu Vang district, Thua Thien Hue province. The population of Vinh Thai is about 6,300 people, of which more than 200 are poor and/or live with a disability.

Currently, the poor and people with disability in Vinh Thai are facing a lot of difficulties because they don’t have appropriate jobs, and   can’t generate income for their families; most of them do not have enough money or training to start a business. During the past, Vinh Thai had some relief policies for people with disabilities (supply rice, foods, building charity houses and so forth). However, they were not long-term, sustainable solutions that could help them and their families and indeed they didn’t create a stable income to help improving economic condition for poor or people with disabilities

According to the result of recent surveys made by Hearts for Hue and the Vinh Thai’s People Committee , there are over 150 people who are poor and / or living with a physical disability. These families are looking forward to getting jobs and to generatinge income for their families. Most of them are farmers between 40 and 60 years old. Their main activity is rice/vegetable farming with a low income of less than 60 USD per family, per month. With 3-4 members in each family, this is not enough for them to pay the daily living expenses (foods, water/electricity bills, medical care, education for children…). Their education level is very low, most of them only having primary school education.

Understanding the difficulties that the poor and those living with a disability are bearing daily, Rotary International has approved a program on improving living quality of the poor/ or disabled people in Vinh Thai commune. The program will establish a chicken raising club in Vinh Thai commune. By the end of the project, the club will be self-governing and assist members in raising chickens, providing veterinary care, marketing assistance and giving members direct access sell to restaurants.

These are the primary activities:

– Training courses on chicken selection, chicken foods, raising technique, veterinary care and chicken coop construction for 150 people who are poor and/or living with a disability (50 people per training). This will help them to start raising chicken.

– Chicken coop construction for 150 poor families which will be built completely by local people and local construction companies

– 15.000 fully vaccinated chickens, aged 21 days will be provided to 150 families

– 20 selected members of the project will be trained to become local vet aides who will support other members in chicken raising and related veterinary matters after grant fund ends

– 20 selected members of the project will be trained to become local salesman who will support the other members in the club on purchasing baby chicks and selling chickens after grant fund ends

-Monthly meeting on chicken raising, marketing between all members of the project will be led by the local veterinary aides and local salesman trained by the project. The monthly meetings are also good opportunities for them to develop the community and empower for women.

The program with the total fund of 58.171 USD will be started from August 2019 and end when the club is self-sufficient. We expect this will be in July 2020.

On behalf of Hearts For Hue, local authorities in Thua Thien Hue province and local people in Vinh Thai, we would like to thank Rotary International for the support of the of this program.

Hearts For Hue Team.
