Duck Breeding and Soil Improvement for the mental illness patients at Thua Thien Hue Social Center

The Thua Thien Hue Social Center was established in 1986, 15 kilometers west of Hue City. This mental health facility accommodates 500 patients. Over the past few years, the DOVEFund has supported animal raising programs (chicks, ducks, and quail) and training classes for the patients and staff of the social center. These programs have brought about many practical benefits for the patients. Their health has been improving. They are now better able to take care of themselves and in turn, assist other patients. The Social Center has long known that raising animals and cultivating livestock are useful therapies to help patients. However, due to limited funding, there are still a great number of patients who do not have an opportunity to get involved in these activities.

To provide more assistance, Hearts For Hue, sponsored by the DOVE Fund, has implemented new programs for breeding ducks and improving farming conditions. Animals, animal feed, vegetable seeds and fertile soil have been provided for the patients. After six months these programs have achieved remarkable results. Patients take turns in caring for 1000 ducks every day. The patients built a duck shelter. They attend classes to become qualified in animal raising techniques. In addition, there are now over forty garden beds full of fresh vegetables. They are healthy and productive thanks to the hard work of the patients. The Social Center is also able to save money by growing these products instead of buying them at the local market. More patients now have an opportunity to get involved in working therapy. These physical activities and tasks assist in improving their mental health. As planned, the Social Center will continue to expand the gardens and plant a wider variety of vegetables. On behalf of the Social Center, Hearts For Hue would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the DOVE Fund for their generosity and ongoing support.

Hearts For Hue Team.
