Building the adaptive capacity of family chicken farmers to climate change in Huong Van Commune sponsored by Australian Volunteer Program

Under the sponsorship of Australian Volunteer program, the project “Building the adaptive capacity of family chicken farmers to climate change in Huong Van Commune” has been implementing with the aim of increasing awareness by 30 poor/disadvantaged chicken farmers in the Hue region of adaptation options for responding to climate change.

On 15th July, Hearts for Hue in association with Huong Van Ward’s People Committee delivered a training on raising technique for 30 chicken smallholders. Those participated in training include Mr Truong Trong Khanh – Chairman of Hearts For Hue, Mr Nguyen Xuan Ba –  a former head of Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary from Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry, Mrs Dang Thi Thuy Nhi – Chairwoman of Red Cross in Huong Van Ward’s People  Committee.

At the beginning of the training, Mr Truong Trong Khanh gave a short briefing on project activities, party’s rights and obligation while participating the project with the aim of making a change in a sustainable way.

After that, Professor Nguyen Xuan Ba discussed about the difficulties and shortcoming of the current chicken raising practices of the local areas with the chicken smallholders.

After gathering views and ideas from participants, Professor Nguyen Xuan Ba analyzed the difficulties and proposed solutions to deal with the disadvantages by the following activities:

  • The importance of type of chicks and how to choose the most suitable type of chicken to be grown in the local. 3F Viet chickens is highly recommended as they are able to adapt any weather changes.
  • The importance of building a chicken coop with proper techniques and the process of building it
  • Preparation steps before/ after getting the chicks into the chicken coop such as cleaning/ disinfect chicken coop; arranging poultry equipment and so on
  • How to mix ingredient foods for 21 days old chicks/ chickens and how to take advantage of a locally available food resource.
  • Technique on raising 21 days old chickens

Before that, on 9th June 2021, Hearts for Hue delivered a training on the project’s management skills for five local people including Mr Nguyen Ngoc Tuyen (Chairman of Huong Tra Town Local Red Cross), Nguyen Xuan Chinh (Chairman of Huong Van Ward People’s Committee), Pham Thi Nhu Y ( Vice Chairman of Huong Van Ward People’s Committee), Tran Thi Ngoc Nhung (Vice Chairman of Huong Van Local Red Cross) and Dang Thi Thuy Nhi (Chairman of Huong Van Red Cross). Additionally, a local management board has been established. Through the training, the local management obtains a better understanding about the project’s activities and project’s management skills.

The project “Building the adaptive capacity of family chicken farmers to climate change in Huong Van Commune” is funded by Australian Volunteer Program. The program offers a range of opportunities for the Australian community to share skills and foster linkages with people and organizations in developing countries: to make a difference as part of Australia’s overseas aid program.
