On 16th February 2022, Hearts For Hue in association with Huong Van Ward’s People Committee conducted an evaluate survey of the project “Building the adaptive capacity of family chicken farmers to climate change in Huong Van Commune” under the sponsorship of the Australian Volunteers Program.
Over the past 8 months, the project implemented a range of activities:
- Carrying out a comprehensive survey of the beneficiaries and other stakeholders in the community
- Delivering 06 training courses on poultry husbandry practices for responding to climate change and marketing and sale in consuming market
- Constructing and displaying chicken coops which show how the impacts of climate change can be reduced (e.g. heat and cold extremes)
- Delivering 2250 fully vaccinated chicken and veterinary medicine for 30 families
- Establishing a self-help club to support in technical matters and marketing chicken products for all disadvantaged and /or disabled persons in the club after the grant fund ends
- Holding 12 monthly meetings on sharing experiences on chicken raising
After 8 months of implementation, the program has achieved remarkable results and the benefits of the program are demonstrated are as follow:
For the Huong Van Community:
- The project has formulated a raising chicken climate change adaption model which:
o can be used by the other farmers
o provide a range of qualified products to meet the demand of the consumption market.
- Raising chickens not only provide food but is also considered as a way to earn living for local people.
- Establishing a Self-help club creates a premise for the expansion and development of chicken raising model in the entire of the ward
- It contributes to building a new style of rural areas in terms of developing economic – society considerably.
For the local farmers:
- 30 participants include women, people with disability and men were involved in the program which provided those qualified skills, marketing skills and techniques regarding chicken raising practices for responding to climate change
- The participants are now able to make a raising plan which suitable for the local weather conditions
- 30 chicken coops were built/ renovated completely which show how the impacts of climate change can be reduced (e.g heat and cold extreme)
- Poultry are healthy and numerous. The mortality rate is about 1% which is low, which demonstrates that the new breeds of chicken are better adapted to local conditions and the advantages of poultry vaccine interventions for climate change.
- They are now confident to raise a flock of over 100 chickens
- Raising chickens create a sustainable income as well as improve the financing for the disadvantaged/disabled people
- The beneficiaries are able to connect with each other to reduce the investment cost as well as found out the consumption market for chicken products
- Besides, the project also strengthens the relationship between people in different villages as well as sharing the raising experience for each other
