Under the sponsorship of the Rotary International, on the 27th September, 2019 Hearts For Hue in collaboration with the Vinh Thai Commune People’s Committee organized a training session for poor/disabilies families on the model of chicken raising. Attending the training, there had participants of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Ba –Head of Department of Animal Husbandry; University of Agriculture and Forestry, Ms Nguyen Thi Be– Vice Chairman of the Vinh Thai People’s Committee, Mr Truong Trong Khanh – Chairman of Hearts For Hue along with 50 families in need in Vinh Thai Community, Vietnam.
The training started with a discussion among participants and Professor Nguyen Xuan Ba about the difficulties and shortcoming of the current chicken raising practices of the local areas. The disadvantages given were ineffective breeding techniques, lack of shelters, lack of knowledge about chicken raising, breed selecting, chicken food and the consumption market etc. As a result, the chicken survival rate is low and it is not being sold with a reasonable price.
After gathering views and ideas from participants, Professor Nguyen Xuan Ba analyzed the difficulties and proposed solutions to deal with the disadvantages by the following activities:
- The importance of building a chicken coop with proper techniques.
- The most suitable type of chicken to be grown in Vinh Thai is the 3F Viet chicken. By raising 3F Viet chickens, they will be able to raise one additional flock every year.
- How to take advantage of a locally available food resource.
In addition, every household will be responsible for building or renovating a chicken coop that is appropriate for the breeding pattern which program has provided. On the next three-days, Hearts For Hue will be visiting Vinh Thai once again. We will be going directly to the houses of the project participants who have asked for technical guidance in the design of their chicken coops. According to the plan, the chicken coop construction will be completed by 20th October 2019. After that, Hearts For Hue will provide 100 fully vaccinated chicks for the families to start raising.
The current programme has been implementing with the aim of providing the knowledge, and the initial capital to help these farmers transition from subsistence farming, to breeding chickens at a sufficiently large scale that they can sell produce in local markets.
