Located about 50 km away from the center of Hue city, Hong Ha is a mountainous commune of A Luoi district, with a population of 1,800 people in 450 households. The main ethnicities are TaOi, KaTu and Paco, make up 85% of the population.
The sanitation is one of the challenges for local people and local authorities, as nearly 60% of households do not have hygienic latrines. Most of them use homemade latrines which made from temporary materials or go directly to rivers or streams. This has exerted negative affected on the environment and the health of local people. Through a recent survey, we found that most of local people are very eager to have a hygienic latrine with bathrooms, but they do not have enough money to build.
Mr Le Van Hoi – a chairman of Hong ha Commune shared with us: “Currently, the total population of this commune is 1800 people in 450 households. At present, the commune confronts an extremely serious issue. That is a compost latrine. Only 40 percent of populations have a standard toilet. The remainder of the population hasn’t had a standard toilet. Their current toilets were made from temporary materials. They only dig a hole and defecating till it fully, then backfilling. This kind of toilets has exerted a negative effect on the environment which also caused many cases of diarrhea and gastrointestinal disease. The local authority and the residents are seeking assistance from the other organizations to improve the living quality of the ethnic minority people.”
Mr Ho Van Dao – a local villager told us: “I have 2 children who are at school age. My family’s toilet is not good. I have found it difficult to use our toilet, especially in the rainy season. I am truly expecting that somebody will able to help us to build a standard toilet”
Hearts For Hue hopes that the sponsor will consider supporting the construction of latrines to improve the environmental sanitation for the local villagers in Hong Ha Community.
