Lai Thanh Primary School is located approximately 20 km from Hue City with 98 pupils aged from 6 to 11 years in total. This school has 14 classrooms with 2 floors and two bathrooms that were started building in 2007 from the NGOs fund. Because of the lack of fund, so the school cannot re-paint the windows and doors of classrooms. This has affected the hygiene of the school and the education quality of children. In addition, the children do not have the opportunity to communicate with foreigners to improve their English skills. Therefore, with the aim of improving the learning environment as well as making more children develop an eagerness to go to school, Hearts For Hue in collaboration with The Swiss Cottage Secondary School organized the “Horizon Programme” in Lai Thanh Primary School and Huong Van Kindergarten in October 2018.
Only in three days, thanks to 60 Singaporeans students, 8 teachers, 2 local tour guides and 9 Hearts For Hue volunteers, the doors and windows of 5 classrooms and 2 main gates were redecorated completely.
In addition, in order to beautify the hallway stairs, the Singaporeans painted murals that feature significant quote. Not only does this motivate and engage children in learning, inspire them getting through their limit and growing their passion, and develop their imagination by the vivid, creative and colorful murals but also provides a learning environment outside their classrooms while they are playing or walking outside the classroom.
Moreover, the young volunteers assisted children to learn basic English through kid songs and useful children games. Children were so excited to have a great opportunity to communicate in English with native speakers. Additionally, international volunteers had the chance to experience the rural life in the countryside as well as contributing their valuable effort in improving learning environment for children.
Hearts For Hue would like to say thank you for the Singaporeans volunteers of Swiss Cottage Secondary School, Vietnamese volunteers and primary school staff who made the program a success.
