Vietbay Teens Chicken Project is still going strong

In 2024, Hearts for Hue implemented the “Chicken Raising for People with Disabilities” project in Quang Phu commune. The project was kindly sponsored by Vietbay Teens, a group of Vietnamese American high school girls in the United States that aims to connect youth in the community with their cultural roots.

The project had the aim of empowering 10 families who have family members with disabilities by providing them with the means to improve their income and quality of life.  The project’s focus was to construct chicken coops on the families’ land and provide training to the families on proper handling and care of chickens. In October 2024, the families each received 50 fully vaccinated chickens, along with feed, a poultry feeder, a poultry waterer and medicine.

In June 2025, Hearts for Hue staff visited the 10 families to see the benefits that the project had brought to the families. The families felt overwhelmingly appreciative. They thanked Vietbay Teens and Hearts for Hue for helping them improve the quality of their lives.

Mrs Le Thi Ha shared: “I would like to thank the program. It has given me a job, increased my income, and brought me more joy in my life”.

The general observations from the visit eight months after the chickens were delivered were that the chickens were well cared for.  The chicken coops that were constructed remained in good condition and were regularly cleaned, providing suitable roosts for the chickens.  The families had provided reasonable areas attached to the chicken coops for the chickens to thrive.

Many of the families are now breeding chickens, allowing them to have a consistent supply of meat and eggs.  A number of the families were also selling meat and eggs locally, improving their incomes and their lives.  These families are keen to continue with the project, with some of them expressing the wish to receive more chickens to increase their micro businesses.

A representative of Mrs Trần Thị Nguyệt’s family shared: “We sincerely hope to continue receiving support from the program so that we can keep raising chickens. This job aligns well with both our family’s situation and our physical health conditions”.

Hearts for Hue again extends our gratitude to Vietbay Teens for their support in improving the lives of families in need.  We value their ongoing support as a partner of Hearts for Hue.

The project has achieved its goals to empower individuals with disabilities and create a more equitable and inclusive community.
