Ngee Ann Polytechnic: September

From 15th September to 29th September 2014, Hearts for Hue (H4HF) in collaboration with Ngee Ann Polytechnic (Singapore) organized a Community Service Program in Quang Cong commune, Quang Dien District, Thua Thien Hue, Vietnam. After nearly 2 weeks, 30 students and 4 teachers of Ngee Ann in coordination with 15 Vietnamese volunteers and local people built a fence aroundQuangcong kindergarten; provided eye screening service for over 1,500 local villagers and of which there were 500 people granted glasses (far and near distance glasses). Besides, the volunteers also taught English for children and implemented a carnival with students of Au lac college(Hue). In addition, the Singapore students had chances to visit farm fishing areas, experience agricultural activities and have meals with local people, which help them gain insight into life in rural areas. What’s more, as a part of cultural exchange, the delegation also had a cultural exchange program with the Vietnamese students from Au Lac college as well as visit some famous attractions in Hue with kind help from Hue students – volunteers of H4HF. In this program, the total fund for the Singaporean delegation to support the fence construction and eye screening was nearly 20.000 USD.

This construction and eye screening program, which is particularly meaningful to the locals, creates a clean and safe learning environment for children as well as enhances public health. Moreover, this is also a good opportunity for a cultural exchange between Vietnamese and Singapore students in order to strengthen the relation between Vietnam and Singapore.

On behalf of Hearts for Hue, we would like to thank you very much for the support of the volunteers of Ngee Ann Polytechnic and the great contribution of Vietnamese volunteers to make possible the success of the program.
