Training on sow raising for people affected by AO in Hong Trung Commune

Located approximately 80 km far from the center of Hue city, Hong Trung is a mountainous community of  A Luoi District in Thua Thien Hue Province with a population of 2,092 people. The poverty rate is very high, 200 out of the 549 households live in poverty, that’s 40% of the population. This commune is one of the poorest communes in the A Luoi District. Moreover, over 800 in this community are still negatively affected by the lasting affects of Agent Orange.

On May 18th 2018, under the sponsorship of the Veteran For Peace, Hearts for Hue, in collaboration with A Luoi Agricultural Extension Center and Hong Trung People’s Committee, organized a training for individuals suffering from disabilities due to the effects of Agent Orange. 30 individuals participated in the training and were taught how to properly raise pigs as a source of income.

The head of the Department of Animal Husbandry at Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry, Professor Nguyen Xuan Ba, lead the training alongside representatives of local authority and Hearts for Hue’s chairman, Mr Trương Trong Khanh.

The training started with a discussion among participants and Professor Nguyen Xuan Ba about the difficulties and disadvantages of the current sow raising practices in mountainous areas.  After gathering views and ideas from participants, Professor Nguyen Xuan Ba analyzed the difficulties and proposed solutions to deal with the disadvantages by suggesting the following activities:

  • Choosing the most appropriate raising model to follow
  • Providing for techniques of building shelters for sows and shelters for piglets
  • Training on choosing pig breeding, food, and sow raising, insemination of sows, raising pregnant sow techniques etc.

Hearts For Hue has been implementing the sow raising project in communities around Hue for three years and it has proven to provide a positive, lasting impact on people lives. By creating jobs for people suffering from disabilities due to the lasting affects of Agent Orange, the sow raising project is able to support sustainable community development by allowing individuals to receive a steady, reliable income. Hearts For Hue would like to expand the sow raising program to more individuals living in the A Luoi community and assist in bringing the community out of poverty.

Hearts For Hue Team.
